Art Attack with Shibika

How to work in teams and showcase an individual’s creativity was taken into consideration in one of our most interactive session Art Attack. The objective of the workshop focused on understanding the mindset of the potential customer and then producing the right kind of creatives that are required for the publicity. Understanding the potential customer and enhancement of ones creativity was the objective of the workshop. It was held in Conference Room of Academy of Fine Arts on 13th December, 2008.

This workshop was conducted by an eminent Communication Designer who was done her masters in design from IIT Kanpur. She has worked as Graphic designer, Interaction design and Ethnography in Elephant design,Pune ,Oracle India Bangalore, Honeywell Technology Solutions Bangalore , ITC Infotech ,Kolkata Mrs Shibika Chaudhury.Accompanying Mrs Shibika Chaudhury was Mr Anindya Kashta who is a Product Designer and has done his Master of Design (Product Design) from IIT Kanpur He has worked in McCann-Erickson India Ltd ,Hawkins India Ltd ,Jayana Packaging ,ITC Kolkata.

The attack on creativity began by dividing the students into groups from the very beginning of the workshop .Students were divided into groups of ten. They were told to think about a product. After deciding about the product they were to decide the name of the company.

At first, students found it easy to think of a product and decide the company name. but things became more streamlined when the students were asked to decide the advantages and the services that the company is providing to its potential customer. That was not it, the next step was to design a logo appropriately matching with the profile of the company.

It was brainstorming task for the students. What should be the design of the logo? What kind of colors are to be used? Shibika and Anindya were giving constant advice to the teams as what color should be chosen and why? What is its significance? Next was to design a poster for the company. Students were to complete the task within a stipulated time.

Shibika and Anindya ultimately asked the teams to send in their representatives and to give a presentation regarding their product, the advantages, the logo of the company and its significance. Students had come up with excellent ideas. It became difficult to differentiate as to who was the best. The explanations were appropriate.
The ambience was full of excitement when one of the groups was declared as winner. Among such creative students it became very difficult to choose the best.

Mr. A.D.Singh, Centre Head, Arena Animation Chowringhee stressed upon exercise that was conducted by Shibika and Anindya. He also emphasized on participating on more brainstorming contest in which one can understand its product and can create appropriate graphics to represent a company. In the closing ceremony, awards have been handed over to the students who have achieved excellence in Academics. The Arenite of the Month was Sweta Jaiwal and Best Academic Performer Award went to Kaushik Dutta.

Arena Interface 2008

The Annual Interface Awards 2008 hosted by Arena Animation – Chowringhee was held on 15^th November,2008 amongst much fanfare, pomp and festivities. The event had been designed keeping in mind the dual purpose of harnessing the best of talents in each of the students and at the same time generating widespread interest in the animation industry.

The God of all Awards began with the lighting of the diya by the chief guest Mrs Jaya Seal Ghosh (famous actress, dancer and wife of percussionist Mr Bickram Ghosh)

Then rolled on the award ceremony seasoned with an amazing dance and song performances, fashion show sequences and skits. The students had put in months of hard work and dedication to put up a wonderful show.

Moments had become very emotional during the award ceremony when the prize winners were given prizes from their parents and guardians itself. The true spirit of interface could be felt when there was a loud cheering in the audience for their friends and fellow mates who had won the award and even for those who were performing.

The MC for the show Ms. Gunjan Sinha (RJ – Radio Mirchi 98.3 fm ) spiced up the show with an animated performance and quiz shows for the audience. The venue, Vidya Mandir which has a sitting capacity of 738 seats was overfull before the show began and a lot of students had to stand or sit in the sidelines to watch the show proceedings.

The award ceremony was seasoned with an amazing dance performances and song performances by our very own students who had put in months of hard work and dedication to put up a wonderful show. Our student also got fashionable by putting up a fashion show with different sequences and not to forget our drama which was inspired by Mughal e Azam but in a most comical manner.

Students who had worked hard and had put in special effort were awarded with Rizwanur Rahman Special Award .

How could we forget our Arenites of the Month and the academic performer of the Month who have performed well all the year round? We felicitated them for their excellent performances in the field of academics and overall behavior. The candidates were awarded on particular month but we had to felicitate them on this grand platform. Even we acknowledged our judges who helped us in selecting the winners without partiality for anyone.

The most popular awards category included the award for Best Batch which these awards inculcate amongst the student a feeling of unity and a competitive spirit in order for them to perform better.

The first category is BEST BATCH OF 2008.

The criteria being a) Academic performance, b) Attendance and Regularity d) Behavior and Interaction with fellow students and team members. Best is always kept for the last and it was the award for Miss Arena and Mr Arena. This Category is based on Academics, Student’s involvement in the center’s activities and overall behavior. Our Miss Arena ward went to Miss Moumeeta Bhattacharya and Mr Arena to Sawan Kumar Gupta.

Moments had become very emotional during the award ceremony when the prize winners were given prizes from their parents and guardians itself. The true spirit of interface could be felt when there was a loud cheering in the audience for their friends and fellow mates who had won the award and even for those who were performing.

Our team members’ were acknowledged and were introduced to the audience. Immense cheering came from the student who were present in the audience which made us feel special and we realized to what extent these students love us and respect us.

Mr. A.D. Singh, Centrehead concluded by giving a vote of thanks to all the sponsors and promising to make the event a grander one in the coming years.

We began with the first award on graphics category like Meri Pehchan which was a logo making contest. Where the students were asked to create a logo of a certain given brands like networking, toy’s company or soft drinks brand . We had around more than 98 entries in this category. The other graphics category in which the contest was named as Bijoyar Mishti Mukh represented the festive season of Durga Puja where the students prepared a greeting card for Shubho Bijoya. Each student gave more than one entry moreover what were astonishing were the creative ideas that each one of them came up with. Restoring History was again where distorted images had to be rectified.

The 2D cartooning category was a lot more fun which was named as He, She and Chottu where students had to make characters of a family.

The audio – video category rocked the hall when nominations for Jhalak dikh la Ja were announced.where interesting movie trailer by editing existing movies. BREAK KE BAAD is the name of our next category. Here the students were asked to prepare an ad commercial like what you see on T.V. . The winner was a group called Ravans where the student had made an interesting trailor using images and sound nad was generated in public interest as the topic of their commercial was Aids.

The next category was web design and the name of the contest was Hungry Kya?? Here the students had to make an introductory page on a fictitious watch company. The other was ROK SAKO TO ROK LO where students had to make an introductory animation for fictitious watch company.

The 3D animation category was amazing since the 3D character that they had made in Banao Apna Hero just represented how innovative and creative the students could come up with. The 3D environmental showreel students had made wonderful walkthrough in 3D.

The award ceremony Our student also got fashionable by putting up a fashion show with different sequences and not to forget our drama which was inspired by Mughal e Azam but in a most comical manner.

Immense support and participation came from students and volunteers and team members who had made this show possible. We rounded up the show with the promise of being back with a grandeur show next year.

Avenues in Animation

Avenues in animation – Approaches, preaprations and practices was the topic of our workshop which we were exploring. We learn animation but we do not to know the right path that has to be taken to be a successful Animator.

Our eminent speaker was Mr Puneet Sharma who is presently part of the Senior Technical Advisory Group at Arena Animation. He started his career in the Animation Industry as a Graphics Designer with Moving Picture Company, Delhi and has a professional experience of nearly 12 years working with TV Production houses, Web-portal Companies, Multimedia companies and leading Animation studios. He has worked on various domains of animation – web, multimedia, e-learning, architectural walkthroughs, social ad campaigns, animated ads (TVCs) & films (2D & 3D). His last assignment was with Zee Institute of Creative Arts (ZICA Studios) as Head of the Academy and Production.

Animation is used in various fields like television, movies, e learning and many more.
As Mr Puneet pointed out, that India would produce at least 2D animated films in the year 2008 -09. He pointed out that study of principles of Design and Composition is essential for becoming a successful animator. The study of posses of different creatures, their gestures, expressions and perspectives play a vital role before we start working on the software with tools.

To become an animator ones Approach and Preparation would include the principles of animation, study of stop motion animation, the story telling techniques, story boarding with the help of film language , study of acting for animation and identification of specialization and ones core strength.
One cannot become a professional animator until one does not know the correct method to practice. One must be a member of animation groups like TASI, ASIFA. Active participation in various seminars and workshop would enhance our knowledge. Reading of animation magazines and journals would give us an insight into the latest developments into the animation industry. Master classes and launches are also important.

Mr Puneet showcased various samples to explain the points for examples from certain animation films like Ice Age 2, short films from PIXAR and many more.

The workshop not only intended in just giving a presentation but it was an interactive session where the students could ask questions and could clarify their doubts, if any. For example one of them questioned about Background making in animation whereas another participant clarified their doubts on rigging for 3D.

Mr. A.D.Singh, Centre Head, Arena Animation Chowringhee stressed upon that participants should ask more and more questions because may be even a simple question can prove to be vital in future. He stressed on concepts being the most important to become an animator rather than tools of a software. Mr singh also pointed out that we wanted Arena Chowringhee students to be ‘Designers’ and not ‘Tailors’. The Arenite of the Month was Jai Shankar Singh and Best Academic Performer Award went toAstik Kumar. Special Awards for outstanding participation was given to Bivash Parbat and a Rizwanur Rahman Creative Award For 1st Semester was given to Sanjib Adhya of TTS 9-11 batch.

Art Attack

The attack on an individual’s creativity was done our one of the most creative fun and learning session of ours entitled as Art Attack. Exploration and enhancement of ones creativity was our objective of this session which was held on 23rd August 08 in the Conference Room of Academy of Fine arts. The workshop was conducted by an eminent advertising professional who has many years of experience in advertising, also a cartoonist, theatre practioner and script writer Mr. Arthur Cardozo.

It aimed at giving an insight into creative conceptualization in terms of acquiring the Big Idea and Perceiving and Associating with the same.

It was a brainstorming and an interactive workshop where the students had to be participative and discover the creative potential within them. The first exercise involved closing ones eyes and to give a description as what they were viewing. Numerous interesting answers were given by the participants. The next task was to make an interesting advertisement on a face cream.

Certain interesting international advertisements were showcased for the participants to generate more creative ideas within them.

The ambience reached its peak when Arthur organized a small contest for the participants. They were given a task to make a poster on promoting literacy in India. Participants were divided into groups of nine. Participants got a chance to showcase their talent within a stipulated time. Some very interesting posters were submitted. Two groups were declared as winners.

Mr. A.D.Singh, Centre Head, Arena Animation Chowringhee stressed upon the role of moving from the tool based(software) training towards concepts training(design concepts, visualization, pre production)while pointing towards the role of the Faculty Members as Mentors, to help students recognize their inherent talents, and motivate them to bring their talent in front with proper application. In the closing ceremony, awards have been handed over to the students who have achieved excellence in Academics. Mr singh also pointed out that we wanted Arena Chowringhee students to be ‘Designers’ and not ‘Tailors’. The Arenite of the Month was Ayush Agarwal and Best Academic Performer Award went to Debaleena Dutta. Special Awards for outstanding participation was given to Alokananda Basu and a Special Award for excellence in 2D storyboarding was given to Sujay Dubey.

ANIMATION-The Making

Time and space play a critical role in Animation. Animation Types -and making was what we were exploring on 19th July 08 in the Conference Room of Academy Of Fine Arts. It was divided into two sections 2D & 3D being headed by persons who have excelled in their respective areas- Mr Jayanta Roy Chowdhury, Mr Biplab Chandra , Mr. Arup Guha , & Mr. Indranil Ghosh.

The purpose of the seminar was to give a vivid picture to the students about the usefulness of sketching in developing of ideas & critical analysis of movies where certain principles are getting followed by animators. Moreover, it focuses on developing how a person should think in making animation films.

Certain exclusive samples were displayed to explain the concept. Fascinating pencil sketches of Young Tarzan, Timon, and Jungle Book Junior and movie clips of The Popeye Show were showcased with explanations.
The charm was such that one would be glued to their seats to know the final outcome of the whole making of the character.

Heading from 2D animation our expertise went on to enhance the audience with the 3D animation knowledge. The points of the day were the uses of motion capture devices, concept of digital double character and compositing digital double background. Outstanding samples from the Making of King Kong in WETA Animation Studio were showcased along with vivid explanations.

The making of 3D characters or films would make one feel as if life was pumped into these so called Larger than Life characters.The workshop was concluded by focusing on the kind of production pipeline that is being followed in 2D and 3d animation studios during the film making. The different stages of pre-production, production and post production were also explained with examples to clear the doubts of students.

Magic with 2D

What is Creativity? Is it something cherished only by selected few geniuses? Or do we all posses it? Where does Creativity stand in today’s Techno World? As we all know, they are the elements from two separate World, i.e., Creativity and Technology – Art and Science. Ruled by separate sections (Hemisphere) of our Brain – Right: Arts, Left: Science. Is there an effective combination and communication possible to enhance our everyday life through mixture of these two elements?

These were the Questions went under scanner. All these were thoroughly scrutinized, investigated and analyzed in the Conference that was held in Academy of Fine Arts Conference Room on Saturday, 23rd June, 2008. A genuine attempt was made to answer these Questions, by the Students and Faculties of Arena Animation Chowringhee Centre, with the help of an interesting topic - “Magic of 2D: Mingling of Creative Visualization with Adobe Flash Technology to Simulate a Breathtaking World of Rich Media Application.” Ms. Sudeepa Ghosh, Mr. Soumyajit Banerjee, Mr. Sudip Banerjee, Mentor and Faculty Members of Arena Animation Chowringhee, were the main speakers in the event. The main idea they tried to project and confirm was that we, the Designers, Animators, Graphic Artists, need to free our minds from too much dependency towards tools and software, and then we need to cultivate our inner instinct towards creativity and give it wings to take a flight.

There were three case studies, one from each Industry that employs 2D Technology to implement their Creative Outputs – Advertising, Internet, and Animation. The students were encouraged to participate in an interactive question answer session, where they got opportunity to clear all their doubts and achieved clarity on issues like 2D animation, it’s current Market in India, use of Actionscript in Flash Animation, etc. One ready-made example of an E-Project developed in Flash, had been showcased to provide a class-room perspective and knowledge.

Mr. A.D.Singh, Centre Head, Arena Animation Chowringhee, added the most value to the whole Conference with his closing speech. He stressed upon the role of Visualization, Creative Thinking, and Research while pointing towards the role of the Faculty Members as Mentors, to help students recognize their inherent talents, and motivate them to bring their talent in front with proper application.
In the closing ceremony, awards have been handed over to the students who have achieved excellence in Academics. Mr.Singh gave away the awards. Arenite of the Month was Pratibha Sipani and Best Academic Performer Award went to Subhashish Ghosh.
The Conference was not only proved to be a learning point for the Students, but, at the same time, generated huge excitement as they enjoyed watching three Animated Movies that were made mostly in Flash.

TEACHING THE TEACHER TO TEACH THE TEACHER…

August 15 2008, the day I first stepped on the banks of the Arabian Sea, I never knew that when I would be coming back, I would be enriched with knowledge and memories galore. No, I am not talking about the technical skills only...To internalize all the moments of technical knowledge imparted, ideas shared, concepts cleared, production exposure, and current market trends the three days were not enough. There were so many things to learn. During those three days, the IIT campus was buzzing with talent- both existing and upcoming.

Each and every session was very helpful for the students who are preparing themselves for the Industry. Few sessions like Comic Art, Production
management, 2D Principles of Animation, Acting For Animation and Animation Art
Appreciation there were no such technical discussions (in other words, ‘Software oriented’) but still they are very much technical. Because an Animator should not only have expertise in Tools or software but they also have to know the other important factors which make any film successful.

In this context I can quote Manu Ittina: Animation is a 4 dimensional art form, the 4 dimensions being - design, visuals, emotion and art.

The platform may be 2D or 3D, the basic foundation like idea generation; research work, principles of animation etc. are the secrets of perfection. It is mentioned that story telling is an urge of communication and perhaps Animation is the best way. We must remember the words of Prakash Moorthy. According to whom, through Animation we can express the subjective emotion not objective reality.

So what would be the points to remember?? Students have to study the Method acting, Figure drawing, color concept, human characteristic etc. It is not just the suggestion or comment or a mere observation from the industry experts, the entries chosen as the nominations for TVCA Film Screening Session clearly differentiated the PERFECT from the GOOD or the MEDIOCRE.

Note: This piece will remain incomplete unless I mention the enthusiasm or the interest of our students who went to the platform to share the experience of Sand Animation. It is doubtless a good symptom.

"CHANGED"

Our train was scheduled at 2255 hours on the 13th of August 08 and I really did not understand why I started getting calls on my cell phone from 8 pm that night. When I set foot in Howrah Station at around 10 in the night, I was nearly mobbed (I’m not exaggerating on this) by our students and their parents. One look at the parents’ faces and I knew they were anxious. One look at the students’ faces and I knew why they had reached the station as early as 8pm! They were excited.

This was the first-of-its-kind trip that students of Arena Animation Park Street were undertaking – the trip to Anifest 2008. This was one of our steps towards exposing our students to the realities in the world of animation…realities they were still unaware of.

Anifest 2008 turned out to be much more than just an eye-opener. It turned out to be a teacher, a thought-provoker, a constant nagging voice inside our hearts telling us to raise the bar of our expectations from ourselves.. The festival ‘by the animators, for the animators’, introduced us to a new perspective – a whole new way of looking at animation.

I had always known that animation is not just about anything and everything that moves. Mr. Prakash Moorthy, added much more to that by his statement - "Animation is the art of movements that are drawn; not drawings that move." From this point onwards, our way of following the sessions of the fest definitely changed course. I won’t try to put three days of Anifest 08 at a single bit of space (they say half knowledge is dangerous.) Rather, I’ll just put up one-liners by people whom we animation lovers look up to… people who’ve been there and done that… the esteemed speakers at Anifest 08.

· It is not enough to tell a story. It is IMPORTANT to tell the story with artistic visualization.
· Even when you sit to write a story for animation, you need to know animation inside out.
· One just can’t go to the computer and start designing when one is not clear about it in the mind. It’s like going somewhere and not knowing the way!
· It’s important to learn to see things differently. To see differently – learn to see what others ignore.
· Software is like pen and paper. Anything you write doesn’t automatically become good. To be able to communicate well, you must have something to say in the first place.
· To reach the specific shot that you want from a general aspect of something , you need a unique idea. There might be a single story and there may well be a thousand ways of telling it. That’s the fundamental difference between story and story-telling.
· Take care about the APPEAL of the shot. It is very important to hit the emotional core of the shot.
· Analyze your strength and work with it. Don’t try to do everything at the same time.
· Whatever is your software or technology (2D/ 3D/ Motion Capture/Motion Control etc) used for your animation, PRE-PRODUCTION and PRE-PLANNING is very important to maintain the correct FEEL of every shot taken.
· The best way to design an original character is to go a little CRAZY while visualizing it!
· Patience till one “HITS THE RHYTHM” is the key to any good animation.
· Love what you are doing – love the process – but never fall in love with your creation… it arrests your improvement.
· Have FUN – it shows in your work!

If I’d have to make an attempt to put my experience of the festival in one line I’d say that – it all begins with the idea, which is very personal and if you are really passionate about it, the ways to execute your idea are endless.

Arena Park Street learns the tricks of the trade with HAT-Trick 3

26th of July, 2008, Kolkata: Around two hundred and fifty serious animation enthusiasts attended the third in the series of HAT-Trick seminars at the Gyan Manch auditorium today. The seminar was conducted by noted Advertising Film Maker Mr. Dibyendu Bose.

A specialist in Post- Production- Visual Effects and Animation Production with Opus Communications, he has worked on more than 250 commercials and corporate films till date with advertising agencies like JWT, O&M, Lowe, Rediffusion DY&R, Mudra, Bates and other renowned agencies in India and South Asia.

He has also worked in collaboration with award winning animators and film makers Sumant Rao and Gayatri Rao of Animagic Studios Mumbai and with post production houses like Prime Focus, Pixion, Western Outdoor, Prasad EFX, Famous Studios and Famous House of animation and Tata Elexi.

The speaker in action

The seminar started with the speaker sharing his experiences as an ad film maker with animators at various stages of his career. To introduce the students to world-class animation, he first showcased a short animation clip made by a few animators working in Philippines – Manila by the name of “Holy Cow Animations” and surprised us by the information that all the animators were Indians. This led us to the realization that like all other fields, Indian talent is truly appreciated worldwide in the field of animation too.

He also went on to say that one of his most pleasant experiences with animators has been their approach to work- they have looked upon themselves as film maker and not as animators only. Conversely, his worst experience with animators has also been related to their approach to work- when it comes to meeting deadlines, most animators do not keep in mind the importance of deadlines for clients.

Listening...thinking...learning

His emphasis on the correct attitude to work drew a lot of questions from the students. The queries ranged from career prospects to costing for production to visualization to story writing to importance of technical skills vis-à-vis the importance of presentation skills. As he went about answering each query in detail, he also explained the complexities of a making an ad film and dwelt on the ethical aspect of film-making as well.

Commenting on the event, Mr. Ramesh Ruia (Centre Director, Arena Park Street) appreciated the change in the students’ attitude which was reflected in the continuous barrage of questions directed at the speaker. “This proves that the H.A.T Methodology of training has made the students sit up and think about doing things in a different manner. They are taking these changes seriously and are becoming more aware of industry requirements, hence preparing themselves better for the industry.”

The speaker himself summed up the proceedings beautifully – “ Tools are like the brush in an artist’s hands, if the idea and creativity are missing, the brush is of no use to him, but if he doesn’t know what to do with the brush, it doesn’t help much either. What is required is a perfect amalgamation of both.

"375 Spectators - 180 Minutes - 1 Stage and energy unleashed"

12th of July, 2008, Saturday, Kolkata: ...And he came running down the gallery steps of the auditorium to take the centre-stage only to mass hypnotize his audience “gen-Y” for the next 180 minutes.

The incident - Around 350 Arena Park Street students and 25 of their teachers were held captive in Gyan Manch Auditorium this morning for three hours by a gentleman. He did not possess any ammunition except for a microphone. The anticlimax – the captives expressed a sincere desire to hold back their captor after the three hours of captivity.

The event – The second seminar of HAT-Tricks. The captor – Mr. Prosenjit Ganguly.

The animation students of Arena Animation - Park Street, were not prepared for what was in store for them when they trooped into Gyan Manch to hear Mr. Prosenjit Ganguly speak about “The actors behind the action”. There were many disbelievers in them and many had contingency plans that if the seminar was boring they would head to the nearest multiplex for a decent movie.

As is become of Kolkata and reminiscent of the first IPL match of night Riders at the Eden, power failed when PJ started to speak. There were no presentations, no pens, no paper, no audio visuals with him but PJ continued enthralling the audience with his powerhouse “performance”, and not a single soul moved in the packed auditorium. He was a treat to listen to and to watch as he spoke, mimicked, acted, joked and pranced about the stage, making it his own in his signature style.

He introduced the students to the meaning, the process and the stages of animation development. He explained to them the importance of story, research, concept and the visualisation that goes behind making an animation film. He talked about why a rigger or a texture artist or even an animator needs to understand the story to enable them to do justice to the visualisation of the film maker. He explained that these components were the “actors” behind the “action” or the film.

PJ illustrated to his audience how passion as an ingredient can act as a catalyst in the process that translates ones thougts and ideas into the output of animation.
He implored them to cultivate a habit of continuous practice. Through his mimicry and caricature, he showed them importance of acting sense for creating any animation because sans the knowledge of moods and emotions, one can’t portray that feeling into any character. PJ’s dedication was being reflected through his body language and his assets (his “Desktop” and “Laptop” i.e. a couple of sketch books which he always carries).
The also drew examples from his life and his NID days, making the audience identify the profound values of the design process with utmost simplicity. His talk ranged from the simple differentiation between a story (to be read) and a screenplay (to be performed); from the primary lesson of the vitality of remaining a student for life, to the significant aspects of design-visualization and pre-production like ideation, story-telling, story-boarding and character design (The Actors) before taking the actual plunge of getting a film into the production stage (The Action).

Anecdotes from his student-life at NID brought alive a whole new perspective to the total process of learning and teaching animation. And it did raise a few questions in the teachers’ minds: are we being able to create that environment for our students where they can enjoy their education? Even if the answer to this be in the negative, the light at the end of the tunnel was visible too.

And even as he accepted a small token of appreciation from the spellbound audience, it was a unanimous feeling that it was actually he, who had left them the magnanimous gift of a new dream, a new passion, a new love and a new vision-that of transforming oneself from just a student or a teacher of animation to a film maker. At the end of the day, the audience walked out with the same camera they had walked in with - but with different eyes.

Ninety percent of the audience had come to hear a three-hour long lecture from the man whose abovementioned profile suggests but five percent of his persona. The tricks that PJ held up his sleeves, ensured that a hundred percent of the audience went back home, if not with an amazing growth in their knowledge base, then at least with hearts ignited with a passion for animation. The audience laughed with him, responded to him and felt united with him as he took them through an enriching experience of falling in love with the entire process of animation film-making. They had just been re-introduced to the phenomenon called “animation” by PJ.

After the seminar, the Director of Arena Animation, Park Street Mr. Ramesh Ruia invited Mr. Ganguly to speak to the faculties of Arena Park Street in order to help them carry forward the process of Holistic Animation Training introduced by them and Mr. Ganguly did just that by advising the faculties on how to deliver their training for maximum impact.

“PJ’s suggestions and guidelines will be adopted and synced to our current training methodology and we hope to deliver true animators of the type required by the industry as soon as the students who have undergone training under this methodology start to graduate” said Mr. Ruia. He went on to wish that more PJ’s from the animation industry would come forward in this fashion to guide and help Arena Park Street in taking this process forward.

Apni Pehchan – Your Identity (Good Vs Great)

The difference between “Good” and “Great” is an enigma which has probably never been deciphered appropriately. For one, the interpretation of these aspects about anything is highly context sensitive and can change from situation to situation and from one context to another.

So whether there exists a common thread which if followed would lead from one to another i.e. from good to great in the context of animation film development is the issue which we would like to attempt to address hereunder.

I would personally define “Great” as a function of “Good”.

Greatness = function (Good)

The challenge however, is to define this function especially in context of becoming a great animator.

The simplification or expansion of this complex function, which had eluded me for a long time, finally hit me like a lightning bolt and I suddenly became “Buddha” the enlightened one or the only one to have finally cracked the code. (Just kidding)

On a more serious note, I have been thinking about this for a long time and have been involved in numerous debates with the likes of animators, students and even trainers on this subject in an attempt to unearth the truth.

The responses or outcome of all these debates have yielded complex furmulae which transform the path from “Good” to “Great” into a complex maze of roads with names like “Creativity”, “Designs”, “Unique”, “Hard Work”, “Style”, “Skill”, “Dexterity”, “Story”, “Pride” …and the list goes on and the maze becomes more and more complex…….

I am not convinced. I am not undermining the importance of these issues in the hunt for Greatness. All I am saying is that in the journey from Good to Great, these elements are like the signals which our train driver must obey. They enable us to complete the journey safely and surely, but are certainly not the driving force which propels the train that we are aboard in our quest for “Greatness”. They and similar other prepositions are probably the ingredients behind “Good”. The hunt for “Greatness” is still on.

The driving force, which makes a good animator, The catalyst which triggers the final transformation from “Good” to “Great” in the context of animation film making, I believe is the “Junoon”, “Diwaangi” “Fire” or “Obsession” which comes but from the love for this subject. The process of maing a great film starts with igniting the creative fire within ourselves and converting it into a towering inferno which burns out the volatile matter and leaves behind the residue of “Gold” of “Greatness”

This is the objective of our HAT Methodology. We want to make “Great” animators out of you because everyone else is making “Good” animators, and the industry where you are headed does not need “Good” animators – It needs “Great” ones.

Misgivings about the HAT Methodology

A lot has been said and written about the HAT methodology and it is time that we started implementing it effectively without any further delays. We can implement it effectively only if it is interpreted correctly. So let us first clarify misgivings about this methodology.

We all tend to get ensconed in our comfort zones and are very reluctant to break the mould in which we have been living all our lives even though their may be better options available only if take the effort to find it.

Reluctance and misgivings about this methodology stems from this fact. We are all very confortable in doing thigs the way we have been doing and are un willing to take the extra effort to understand anything which is away from our comfort zone. That is the reason there are misgivings about this methodology.

For once this methodology does not say that "tools" or software are not important. We are simply saying that there exists a world beyo9nd this too. All we are saying is that learning just "tools' or teaching just "tools" does not a good animator make.

The Design Visulasitation, Pre-Production and Post-Production aspects of animation film making are equally, if not more, important to the film making process as is production or tooling.

So in effect we are ADDING these aspects to our training methodology and in no way SUBTRACTING anything from it. The aspects other than tooling are a PLUS rather than a MINUS to the overall training that we intend to provide to our students.

Dear Students, Please note the PLUS. and Dear Trainers, Please wake up and smell the coffee. If you want to create good animators, you both need to break your comfort zones and dive head on into this methodology.

Many institutes are there in Private and may I have not heard about any Govt. run Animation school.
So Private parties are:
1.ZICA Studios/Padmalaya Vision Ltd.
- a 2 year comprehensive animation(2D and 3D) diploma
2.Heart Animation Academy
- now teaches only 2d, but soon would launch 3d also.
- 6 mths certificate and 1 year Advanced Diploma course.
- but remember they are asking for good drawing skills before join a
course.
3.Rai University
- They have a Bachelors and Masters degree in Animation and Computer
Graphics.
- But they dont have proper information what we need, may that is
the reason why there are not many registrations in this college.
4.Wondertoons Institute of Animation and Media.
- Well maybe this institute has good courses, but I donot know about
their courses because their website doesnot work and I didnot
personally visit the place.
- Only thing I know about this institute is that it is a part of
Ocean Park, the water entertainment park.
5. Maybe these are ones or more might be comming up, so keep on
reading some stuff on Animation.
